Many failures are from man-made problems and there are also other sources of faults that are from environmental and terrestrial sources. In recent years, intrusions and hacking instances are increasing in numbers and during 2011 alone there was 262.8 million loss or stolen data, 81% are attributed from hacking. Year to year increase in hacking is 37.4% and continue to increase as more and more people start to adopting “smart devices”.
Effects of environmental upset are in the rise as geometry of the device continue to scale down; i.e., faster speed, lower voltage, and smaller charge to flip the bit in the storage element. “Bit Error Rate” becomes issue as di/dt, other noise and aging related instability start to contribute more to the ever increasing number of fault in the device.
